As the school year starts, students from School of the Osage tell us what they are feeling about their back to school experience. One source of information comes from junior student Tray Slaughter. He states that school is “not too great nor horrible.” Even though the school year has just begun, Slaughter said that the “amount of classes” could be lessened and felt “some classes are not needed.” He admitted, however, that “school without friends would be bad.”
Kain Altamirano-Acevedo suggests that school needs “more activities” and that he is still “easing in” to the new school year. Kain’s advice for new students includes, “Don’t get lost [in the hallways]” and “Vaping is for losers; don’t vape.”
While the opinions of students are valuable, the viewpoints of teachers also cast weight. Señor Gier, School of the Osage beloved Spanish teacher, states that school “always needs improvement” and he would change the perspective that “lets teachers make their own policy” for their own classes. Keeping uniform policies and procedures allows for easier transitions and understanding from classroom to classroom. He “enjoys school spirit” and feels confident that the old-school vibe where things “used to be fun” is returning. Regarding school procedures and new policies put in place, he explains we “can’t police everything” in the halls and “students feel welcomed this year.”
