Being a girl and having an interest in things under the hood of a truck might not seem like they go together. However, for some females, this is a job that makes your heart full. “My neighbor was driving past me, and his jaw dropped because I was gapping a spark plug,” Liz Timmons explains. Any time people watch or drive by a female working on a truck, they seem to have the NO WAY! look on their faces and are shocked. Often, our first impression of girls is not that of a go-getter with brakes and front ends and tie rods in her vocabulary.
Liz Timmons sparked her interest in being under the hood of a truck when she was out searching for her first vehicle, and this red, classic, flare side was on the side of the road. She made the big purchase knowing it needed some work. The first big thing we tackled was the brakes. Liz watched the passenger side get all ripped apart and see the new brakes and rotors unboxed. She watched her dad fix the passenger side, and she was able to reattach the new brakes and rotors on the driver’s side.
The first time getting dirty and getting everything put back together was the moment she realized this soothed her mind and filled her heart with joy. After the brakes and rotors were replaced, Liz was able to learn how to change the oil in her new investment. It was as easy as breaking a bolt free and “pulling the plug.” After all the oil cleared out, Liz got back under the hood to add more oil and took satisfaction in doing so.
Even though this endeavor seems to be an atypical thing on a female’s To Do List, Liz realizes taking ownership of finding the values in doing things that males are more likely to do is important and worth it. It teaches that it is okay to step outside of your comfort zone.
