Should everyone have the right to privacy? I think that everyone should be entitled to privacy whether they are of royal status or not. If I lost my privacy it would devastate me. I think that we take our privacy for granted. British law decided to adopt a Human Rights law from the European Convention on Human Rights, which includes article 8. Article 8 focuses on the right to privacy. This includes the Royals and common folks. In years after this law was invoked the courts had to balance the article because célébrités were claiming that the press was invading their privacy. They had to make sure that article 8 did not go against article 10, the right to freedom of expression. These rulings stated that even if the celebrities or royals seeked the limelight, they would be entitled to privacy anyway. This is good because there needs to be a boundary put into place to state when it is wrong to publish something that someone does not want to be published. I have always agreed that we should be able to choose to disclose or not.
When privacy come to public interest; there is no law that decides what “public interest” is. So the courts have to decide on a case-by-case basis. In some cases the court has ruled for the publisher to set the record straight, which is when a public figure or official has acted hypocritically. All medical records and information regarding health everyone is in agreement that this should be disclosed only when the individual is okay and ready. It is afforded the utmost protection. The royals are a little different. They show off the royal birth outside of the hospital, but this does not mean that they don’t deserve privacy. The royals have decided to go with this traduction because if they broke it then it would frustrate both royal-watchers and publishers.
King Charles is going though prostate cancer and he talked a little bit about it being enlarged but has kept quiet about his treatment. By just saying that he was undergoing treatment. He could release more information to appease the masses, but he does not have to unless his health impacts his ability to act as monarch. It is thanks to these laws and courts to be able to protect our privacy. The royal family given their position should be entitled to these same rights.
